In the past years, this convenience store BBQ was an office caterer every year for employee appreciation lunch, mostly because the seasoned chips were so good fresh and warm. But my 3rd recent visit (11/8/13) was my last. Each time I've went in there this year, was terrible. Although the cashier was nice, efforts stopped there. The other surplus workers were idle, and as another reviewer posted, seemed to be standing and waiting for the clock. Upon ordering burnt end dinner and pulled pork sandwich, each with green-bean sides and the famous seasoned chips, we sat down to a cold, COLD, meal that was bland and fatty. The bland sauce was no more than sweet runny catchup. The portions was skimpy. The green beans were barely over room temperature. A $13 small portion meal would have been acceptable if they could have simply microwaved it for a bit. And there's no reason for those chips to be nasty cold. The surplus of 4 staff persons at 6:45 pm on a weekday in a mostly empty place could surely do something to keep the food warm, or pop it into the microwave. The worst part, is after 2 bites, I took my dinner to them, the way the staff assembled in a group and looked at me like I was the problem, not offering to make it right, giving me a disgusted look when I insisted on a refund instead of another cold serving. On my way out, I saw a young couple who just sat down to their sandwiches, and the male tapped his girlfriend, opened his bun, and they were talking about how little the meat was and how cold it was. Never again Lutz's Infamous BBQ. You've lost me and my office. The kids that run that place in the evenings don't care about your reputation. Start with getting a food warming system, and then find management and staff that know something about quality and food-borne illness prevention.

I just flew in to St Louis and I wouldn't have thought that a BBQ joint in a gas stop would be a great winner, but I have to say they delivered. Brisket was PHENOMENAL!!! Hope your expanding... Must have

Don't be fooled, Lutz's is next to a gas station. My wife, daughter, and I stopped by there after reading the great reviews here and after all of the local restaurants had 30-45 minute waits for some odd reason. The parking is ample and the food was quite good. We both had pulled pork sandwiches, one of the 1/3 lb variety and one of the 1/2 lb. Both were very tasty and the at-the-table BBQ sauce complemented the meat very well. You have a choice of side,s, where salad, baked potato, or sweet potato frieds count as two, or you can get two of what's left. Based on the menu prices, the salad and baked potato make sense, but the sweet potato fries seemed to be the same price as the other sides that allowed two total sides. All in all, for our non-gourmet BBQ tastes, the sandwiches were excellent. The sweet potato fries were good, but I'm guessing they were some frozen fries bought from some warehouse store. The chips were homemade and offered with several seasonings, none of which we tried. Jeff City does not offer a great deal in the realm of food, but Lutz's is definitely one of the winners.

Excellent. This is what BBQ is supposed to be. Third time trying the burnt end sandwich, I suppose I'll try something else next time.

In my opinion, this is the best bbq that I've found in Missouri (quite possibly the country). It's in a gas station, but that kind of adds to the appeal for me. Really great brisket here. You must get the homemade potato chips here. I recommend ranch seasoning, but they are all good. The ribs are also great, but my personal favorite has to be the prime rib sandwich. Slather a little of the mustard sauce on that sucker, and I'll tell you that you will not be disappointed. Highly recommend this place.

Customer service is terrible and BBQ is mediocre. It was better when it was in a trailer on the Lowes parking lot. The help does not care about service. One woman even had her foot up on the counter.

Very good BBQ. Their BBQ sauce was very good as well. I had their brisket sandwich and it was delicious. The place was clean and the staff was very nice.

Great food. Combination w gas station is fine, very clean. Only problem, they share rest rooms and only have one stall for women. Not nearly enough for such a busy place.

Was the best BBQ I've had since being in Missouri. I was a little underwhelmed with the burnt ends sandwich I got for lunch though. It was my first burnt ends sandwich, but I was expecting it to be a bit tastier than it was; it was still very good. I couldn't really tell the difference between the St. Louis and the baby back ribs however. Maybe they gave me two orders of baby backs (I got half racks)?

I live in Columbia... but whenever I am in Jeff I try to make it into Lutz's. My favorite is the Burnt Ends Brisket. It is so moist and has just the right amount of fat on it. The buns they use are really soft. The sauce is very sweet, but good. If you're more into the vinegary sauce then this isn't the place for you. One of my favorite bbq places in MO.

Do NOT let the location (inside 1/2 of a gas station mini mart) stop you from eating here. They do have sit down seating available. I enjoyed the baby back ribs, the burnt end sandwich and of course the very addictive freshly made chips with your choice of seasoning. Ribs and Burnt ends were GOOD. I liked it so much, I had to take a full slab back to Ohio.

Good BBQ. The homemade chips are killer with the flavor of your choice. Location and tight sitting arrangements knock my rating down a bit

excellent BBQ! (AS good as Jack Stack in KC) Chips are seriously good. I like the parmesan drenched ones. Pulled pork, brisket, chicken ALL GOOD!!! (Yes, it's in a gas station having moved up from a trailer in Lowe's parking lot.)

Looked on YELP & this seemed to be the place to have BBQ. This is at a gas station. How fun. We ordered the dinner portion of St. Louis ribs and the burnt brisket tips. The brisket was fantastic. The ribs seemed to have a very salty rub on them. It was like eating a salt lick. The home made potato chips were really good. I would go back but I would only order the brisket.

I'm a Jeff City transplant and I love BBQ food, everyone from my work told me I had to try Lutz's. I was hoping the food would be better than it was.. the home made chips were pretty good though. If you don't know what you want the people that work there can be kind of rude too.

Oh yea baby . . . this is B-B-Q. I love the pulled pork sandwich basket with baked beans and sour cream and chive chips. Oh my goodness it's good. I don't care if it's in a gas station, bus stop or tent--the food is great. This weekend give your self a treat and go to Lutz's. You're taste buds will be cheering and your tummy will be happy.

After reading the reviews, I was expecting more. I really wanted for this to be one of those cool, hole-in-the-wall places. But, it's not. The convenience store is new-ish, and seemed pretty clean ... on the positive side. It's not NEXT to a gas station, rather it's PART of a convenience store. And, I have no problems with that, per se. However, it's then priced relatively high, which I guess pays for the probably pricey, kitschy down-home-farm "cute" shtick decor. If I wanted milieu, I would have expected the location to be not attached to a convenience store. That creates a confusing experience. Even without that, the food was "meh". It is fresh. You can watch them put it together across the counter, if you look behind the counter stuffed with t-shirts, "private label" sauces and seasonings, and aforementioned kitschy decorations. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The meat was minimal, and here they serve it without the sauce. It had acceptable flavor and texture, but the sauce (once added) was average. An order of sweet potato fries was about the quantity of a small order of fries from McDonalds. So, the quality was okay, and the quantity was small. And, I payed a price for a premium brand, but the food presentation came with the convenience store quality. About two weeks ago, I paid the same price for brisket slices ... at DFW, and it was a bit better. Who goes to DFW to dine? It's a captive audience of wearied travelers, starved by not eating on planes, and willing to accept almost anything and pay "trapped-behind-security-line" pricing. That's not a redeeming benchmark. So, I was also surprised to find this in Jefferson City ... maybe my tax dollars are paying state workers NYC wages to consider this value-to-pricing acceptable? Finally, it is crowded and small. Not a great place to hang out and chat ... though, again, the restaurant invested some bucks in decor. I realize this assessment is based on a sample size of one. Also, I guess the awards on the wall should've been my clue. They were all for the wings. Maybe my experience would've been better with wings.

This is my absolute favorite place to eat lunch (or dinner). It's a very clean place and you can watch them make your food from over the counter. The staff is always super friendly. I generally call my order in then just go in and pick it up because there is almost always a line at lunch time. It's a bit pricey but the food has always been great and you get a pretty good amount (very filling). I always get the beef brisket, the super delicious cajun chips (hand cut right in front of you!) and the baked beans... They also now offer refillable cups! Love this place and recommend to anyone wanting some awesome BBQ!

I ordered a pound of pulled and bag of chips with jalapeño seasoning. I recommend you go buy your favorite BBQ sauce because they only give a very very small container of theirs.

  • Chi T.

Ordered a pound of pulled pork and a pound of burnt ends to take to go and talk about yum -- it totally hit the spot on a cold and rainy day in Jeff City. A little pricey, but worth it. Definitely go when it's not busy!

Best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had. This place is so legit. Loved the homemade chips with the Cajun AND barbecue seasoning. Heaven....

Very poor. We arrived about 730 (1/2 hr before closing). I had the sampler dinner, which is pork tenderloin, brisket, 1/4 chicken, 2 pork ribs and 2 beef ribs. All of the above were dry beyond belief. Chicken had that grainy texture from being kept warm for hours. Pork ribs were just like jerky. Pork tenderloin almost chalky dry. Mac and cheese had been held so long that the noodles were almost mushy. Chips were good. No indication that any real smoking done on-site, possible that the food is made elsewhere. Granted it was late, but most of what I had should have been thrown out.

My wife and I ate at this resturant once a week. I walked into the resturant tonight and the girl who worked there was definitely not happy to see customers coming in an hour before they closed. She saw us walking into the door and immediately turned around and rose her arms up high. I walked in and I said is it ok that we came and she completely ignored my question. I then was fed up and said thank you and left. We spent over $30 on this resturant every week and this is how we get treated? I always ordered the prime rib 1/2 pound and my wife got the 1/4 prime basket. Three times we got home and both sandwiches were identical. Why was I charged extra for something I did not get? I suggest that the owner needs to train his employees on how important customer satisfaction is.

The best BBQ I have ever had. The pulled pork is amazing. They have great sides personally like the macaroni and cheese, the green beans and the chips. They have good sauces as well. Just a heads up they are not open on Sundays.

Always great. Always wonderful. For me it is always a battle between the decision for the pulled pork or the burnt ends. Either way, you can't go wrong. I am a slaw fan so I am all over the vinegar slaw. The chips...to die for. Thanks for being so close to my home. Or maybe I should hope I would have to travel a bit further so it was not such a temptation--except on Sunday when it is closed.

This was our first visit and it did not disappoint. I ordered the brisket burnt ends. My fiance ordered the Cuban (with pulled pork). Both were very yummy. i am drooling just writing about it. the house made chips were excellent. I recommend Parmesan and cajun mixed together for seasoning on the chips. the coleslaw was ok and the green beans were typical fast food overcooked and watered down. We will be back.

I suppose this is great BBQ for Jeff City, but I didn't find it to be in any way exceptional. The place was busy and the variety of sauces was decent. The chips were pretty good.

Brisket was excellent. Sauce is slightly sweet without any fake smokey flavor added.

Best BBQ in Jefferson City. The pork is to die for. The chips are made perfect. Don't forget to buy some BBQ sauce for your home!

As a frequent business traveler, I find the reviews reflect the local clientele's exposure to barbecue that the rest of the US has to offer. Compared to places like Dreamland Barbecue in Birmingham Al or Keller's in Lake Mary FL, Lutz's is an unfortunate disappointment given all of the hype that other Yelp users have provided. This resulted in a serious misalignment of expectations. My experience started with not accepting American Express. For supporting all other major CCs including Discover, this was their first strike against them for business travelers. Customer service was disappointing. My observation was that I was served by a cook instead of a host or cashier. The disposable gloves gave that away paired with the lack of manners. I was not asked if I wanted to eat in to carry out. He assumed (or hoped) I would take my food to go. Strike 2. I ordered a pound of the burnt ends. I was not even offered a drink. Up-selling is not part of the employee training manual. I was given a bag for my order with no plastic or silverware. I had to ask for some. I asked if I can eat in. So I opened the container and took my fist bite. Overcooked and bland in flavor. Strike 3. There seemed to be no technique in the cooking of the meat. This is where having a good BBQ sauce would save the meal. Their sauce was one part sweet one part weak-sauce. I had to use more sauce than provided in my to go cup. Luckily, if you eat there you can avoid the $0.30 they charge you for the extra weak-sauce. The staff for this shift on the eve of 7-29-2013 did not have the vested interest to do the business justice. When idle, the staff would stare at the door waiting for the next customer. Not even wearing a smile. My impressions was that this job was keeping them from something more important. As mentioned in another review by Bryan M., do not be fooled by the faux "do not be fooled by the hole in the wall" lore that the decor or the location try to portray. Their kitchen equipment is modern. This place operated more like a fast food BBQ restaurant. There is a modern science behind the scenes of this local establishment resulting in a vapid annex to a Citgo gas station. (Which does take American Express) My advice would be to pass on this.

BBQ next to a gas station? Really? I thought this was a bad idea for sure but I was pleasantly surprised. My family needed a takeout dinner fast because we had an event to get to. My sister-in-law suggested Lutz's and despite not being a fan of BBQ I decided this would be fine due to our time constraints. The menu was easily accessible on my cell phone which I appreciated because we were nowhere near a computer and didn't have the takeout menu with us. I decided to try the pulled pork basket which was a pulled pork sandwich with two sides. I ordered the seasoned house chips and baked beans as my sides. The sandwich itself was okay - my particular sammy had a lot of fatty pieces which I had to pick off my sandwich. I think it was just bad luck because the others we ordered were fine. The BBQ sauce was good but what really sold me were the baked beans and chips. Yum, yum, yum!!! I highly recommend the "zesty" house seasoning for the chips. It's soooo good. And the beans were perfect. Beware they contain meat though so you vegetarians will have to pass on them. If I ever go back I'm going to try the turkey sandwich. My sister-in-law ordered it and as soon as I saw it I immediately regretted my pulled pork selection.
